Dog’s Behavior Driving You Crazy? Try These Training Ideas!

TIP! One command that should be taught early to a puppy is “leave it.” This teaches them to drop something and step way from it.

If your dog is trained well, you will have a more relaxing home. Attempt some of the following tips. You may find some of these techniques to really help improve the relationship you have with your dog.

TIP! Training sessions with your dog are best when kept short. Since dogs do not have a long attention span, short lessons will prevent them from getting bored.

There are different tricks you can try when you are crate training your dog. If your puppy seems reluctant about entering the crate, place a chew toy inside and close the door to the kennel. The dog will smell the bone and want to go racing into the crate to eat it. After your dog goes into the crate, give positive reinforcement to increase the chance that he will go into the crate again.

TIP! Training needs to continue during the dog’s life. Training does not stop when your dog leaves his puppy stage.

Repetition is key to teaching your dog new commands. It isn’t unusual to have to repeat a trick dozens of times before the dog understands. Be patient and say the same command in the same way each time. Your dog will learn eventually.

Shock Collars

TIP! Don’t give your dog too many treats as rewards, or he might start adding too many pounds. It’s very easy to overlook how many treats you give your dog, especially during a training session, but they add up if you don’t pay attention.

Stay away from training devices such as shock collars. These devices are expensive and do not always work as well as you would expect them to. Also, shock collars and like devices are just not nice things to use. These methods of training generally fail.

TIP! When training, only use short sessions. Fifteen minutes is a good amount of time since more will only frustrate your dog.

Approach an unknown dog slowly and let him smell your outstretched hand. This allows the dog to get used to your scent and makes him much more likely to trust you. When a dog recognizes the scent, they won’t fear you and will follow commands.

TIP! Is your dog a leash puller? There is an easy solution for this common problem. Purchase a harness, which can reduce the pull on your dog.

Pay attention to how much time you spend training in one session. If you spend too much time doing one training exercise, your dog will become bored. Try limiting training sessions to 10 minutes or less.

TIP! Do not punish your dog when you are training him. You should make every effort to prevent the behavior in the first place, but if your pet does misbehave, show him what he should have done instead.

When you are training your doggy friend, use what is known as primary reinforcement. This technique uses things that your dog loves as rewards. Primary reinforcement could be treats or giving your dog a belly rub. This will teach your dog how to get something he already wants.

TIP! Don’t send mixed signals to your dog when he misbehaves. If you show your pet amusement when he does something good, he will most likely repeat it.

Always use positive reinforcement to train your dog. Remember to show your dog positive attention when they do something good as often as you can. Never hit or shout at your dog. Doing this will cause your dog to act out even more and lose respect for you. If you want good results, you must be positive, consistent and firm as you train your dog.

Stop Barking

TIP! Large dogs that prefer to lie down on their backs or stretch, out should have a big bed to get comfortable in. While you can purchase a large bed for your dog, you could also just use a mattress from a crib.

To get your dog to stop barking, train him to obey a command that tell him to stay quiet. If your dog barks, repeat the order, offer a treat when they stop barking and pet them to show you are satisfied. Then, you can treat them. Once you have diligently used this training method, your dog starts to link the tasty treat with the desired behavior and its corresponding command.

TIP! Even when you are tired or tense, be conscious of how you speak to your dog. Keep in mind that unless your dog has misbehaved immediately before your interaction, your behavior toward the dog should be positive in nature.

Over-training your puppy will expose it to too much at once, rendering the training less effective. Puppies have short attention spans, therefore keep your sessions short and provide ample amounts of praise. When you put too much training on the animal at one time, it can stress the animal and work against what you are trying to accomplish. So keep it short, intense, and create a great bonding and training routine for your new puppy.

TIP! Try several different training techniques to discover which one your dog responds to best. For instance, a loving and calm dog will probably succeed with positive reinforcement, while a dog that is more aggressive may require negative reinforcement to honor your position of alpha.

Whatever age your dog may be, or whatever problems he may have, you’ll find these tips useful. After following the advice, it is important to be patient. If you do so, you both will be at your happiest.
